According to the Mahavamsa, the original inhabitants of Sri Lanka are the Yakshas and northern Naga tribes. According to folklore, the Naga people were one of the groups of original inhabitants of Lanka. They were said to have ruled Nagadeepa, or Jaffna Peninsula and Kelaniya. Naga people were snake-worshipers, and may have been a race of the Dravidians. Sinhalese history traditionally starts in 543 BC at the arrival of Prince Vijaya, a semi-legendary king who was banished from the Indian subcontinent with his 700 followers, and is recorded in the Mahavamsa chronicle.

මහා වන්ශයට අනුව සිරි ලක මුල්ම ප්‍රධාන වැසියන් වූයේ යක්ශ ගෝත්‍රිකයන් හා උතුරු ප්‍රදේශයේ ජීවත් වූ නාග ගෝත්‍රිකයන් ය. නාග ගෝත්‍රිකයන් නාගදීපයත් කැලණියත් රජ්‍යය කොට ගෙන විසූ අතර ඔවුන් නාගයින්ට වැඳුම් ඉදුම් කරමින් විසූ ද්‍රවිඩයින් බවට සැලකිය හැක.

නමුත් සින්හල ඉතිහාස කතාව ආරම්භ වන්නේ ඉන්දියාවෙන් පිටුවහල් කරන ලද විජය කුමරු ඇතුලු 700ක් පිරිස  ක්‍රි. පූ 543 දී තම්බපණ්ණි වරායට ගොඩ බැසීමත් සමග ය.
